  • What are your Budgies' favorite foods?

New Budgie owner here, asking all of the basic questions - ha! What are your Budgies' favorite foods? So far, Boo Boo has only eaten millet and some seed stick treats, but he's only been home a few days. I offer lots of different types of food.

Red clover blossoms, in season. The get really loud when I walk in with that. But that is more of a snack, I think.

Zupreem makes a very tiny fruit pellet (Canary/finch size). Mine will eat a little bit of those. They like Herb Salad, Carrot tops, Romaine lettuce (wet). Mostly what mine eat is a good quality seed mix.

A leaf of Romaine is devoured every day. Carrot tops are much liked too. I do what we did in school. Cut off the top and grow the greens in a saucer of water. They like fresh seed grasses from outside.

Kristen! You got a budgie??? I have to go and look in the past posts to find the story, but, congratulations!
My budgies love leafy greens, especially if they are sopping wet. They will eat them, and roll around and bathe in them if I put them in a shallow dish! LOL They also love broccoli florets wedged between the cage bars, and baby carrots, same way. They love seed, millet, and avicakes, as well as nutriberries. They eat TOPS crumpets, but they arent their favorite. Have fun figuring out what Boo really loves. Cant wait to see a picture of him...gonna go look now!

Mine has Lafebers parakeet pellets in his bowl at all times, which he loves. His all time favorite is for you to hold an almond while he demolishes it. Second favorite a spray of millet. I have to say tho that he will try just about anything you put in front of him, he is a good little eater!

Sorry Kristin. My post went missing : - (

Mine eat pretty much anything I put in their cage, honestly. I always keep Roudybush pellets in their dishes (tried Tops Cumplets but they didn't really go for them, although TOPS pellets are my tiels' favorite). A good seed mix and daily CHOP and greens (be sure to leave some stem on. They love that part). And an earlier post mentioned that if you put the wet greens in a shallow bowl, they will roll around and take a bath). Speaking of baths, mine LOVE baths. I have a few of those little bathtubs with a mirror on the bottom. They really enjoy those. There isn't really anything they turn their noses up at around here.

                          Thank you guys so much.
                          Lyn,
I'm going to have to try the wet lettuce trick tomorrow. Lol.
Bonnie, I found some red clover sprout seeds online. Also some sprout mixes for small birds with red clover. What do you think?
No go on anything except for millet and a little birdie bread I stuck inside a Kris Porter Puzzler Block. I sure am enjoying him and so is Ziggy.

Kristin - I just thought of a comment I saw on another post. Can Boo Boo see Ziggy? And is Ziggy a good eater? I ask this because all of my small birds are in one room, and I really think when they see others digging into food, they are less apprehensive about trying things. Perhaps Ziggy can show Boo Boo how its done? Hehe

Kristen, here is my budgies daily diet:

Breakfast - 1/4 teaspoon of soaked seed mixed thoroughly with about the same amount the chop (the same chop that you make, I believe). A couple of hours later, I crumble up some birdie bread for them (about the size of two dice). I use Harrison's with fruits, veggies & organic baby food added when I bake it.

They both love Zupreem Naturals Garden Goodness pellets, so they have those all the time. When I give them dry seed (a couple of times a week) I feed Volkman's Featherglow.

At dinnertime, they get (and absolutely devour!) about a tablespoon each of warm Higgins Wordly Cuisine (it sounds like a lot, but I think they drop a lot because it's kind of sticky).

Absolute fave treat is millet (fed only in our hands, out of cage), but I occasionally warm up a nutriberry and smoosh it, which they also like.

Mine aren't big on hunks of veggies, greens, etc, which is why I love the chop so much. With the added soaked seeds, they dig right in every morning. Mine seem to like routine, so I keep it pretty much the same.

Looking forward to Boo Boo updates and more pics!
